Xiaomi apparently launching a ‘mini’ handset to take on the iPhone SE

Xiaomi is a company which has something for everybody. Its variety of products is what makes it a successful and popular manufacturer in Asia. Given how the recently released Apple iPhone SE has failed to make an impact that Apple expected, a new report is talking about Xiaomi looking to leverage its failure by releasing an iPhone SE variant of its own.

We’re not sure how the handset will be any different from the Mi 5 (which is a reasonably priced flagship), although we’re guessing this will be a combination of the Mi 5 and the Redmi Note 3 in terms of features. A device like the iPhone SE is quite tricky for Xiaomi and probably wouldn’t make sense in the mobile industry given how Xiaomi can’t rely on rehashing old design, with the market expecting the very best from the Chinese manufacturer.

This particular handset will supposedly be known as the Xiaomi Mini and feature a 4.3-inch HD (1280×720) display on board. This, coupled by the Snapdragon 820 processor makes for a truly powerful ‘mini’ offering. There were reports that Samsung was also considering a device like this (the Galaxy S7 mini?) and we’re awaiting further details on that front.

So the mantra seems to be pretty simple. Keep the display size small and equip the handset with high-end hardware such as the aforementioned processor and a powerful camera sensor. Apple’s pricing model failed miserably, but we don’t think Xiaomi or Samsung would make the same mistake. It is said that the Xiaomi Mini will be priced at 1,800 CNY or Rs 18,400 (approx), suggesting that it will be a reasonably priced offering, but not cheap.

Rumored hardware of the Xiaomi Mini:

4.3-inch HD (1280×720) display
Quad-core Snapdragon 820 chipset
13MP rear camera
32GB internal storage
Fingerprint scanner
Android 6.0 Marshmallow
